Campus Radio- A Platform for Young Journalists

Campus Radio- A Platform for Young Journalists

Campus radio or university radio is a type of radio station that is run by the students of a college, university or other educational institution. It is considered a pivotal tool to provide a platform to the students or young journalists. It gives us, as students or immature journalists to get experience or have an outlook of professional environment and training before entering mainstream media channels.
Campus radio serves as a lab or training center as well, where students are allowed to do experiments on different formats of broadcasting, light radio, radio drama, radio feature, news bulletin for radio, talk shows and radio documentaries. They than form their basis and learn a lot about the techniques of controlling and managing broadcast programs.

One of the most exciting advantage of campus radio is that the programming can be exclusively prepared by the students which enhance their skills and teach them tactics in detail. Sometimes campus radio stations are operated for the purpose of training professional radio personnel, sometimes with the aim of broadcasting educational programming, while other radio stations exist to provide an alternative to commercial broadcasting, but most of the campus radio stations are serving the purpose of giving a platform to young journalists to polish themselves. Adnan Rehmat, head of the local media support organisation Intermedia says, “Journalism students should be able to produce content like talk shows, interviews and current affairs programs for radio and TV as part of their academic activities.” The campus radio thus serves here by providing such opportunities to the media students.

Recent research have shown that community or campus based radio stations are actually contributing to social development. Students are trained in producing such programs which are based on the societal issues to create awareness and give information to their listeners. Such is the aim of our radio campus, Fm 96.6 voice of LCWU, Lahore College For Women University, where trained professional teachers are hired to teach journalistic skills to the media students and to the students who are willing to contribute to the campus radio.
