AS an RJ of FM 96.6 – Voice of LCWU

The most wonderful experience of my bachelors in Mass Communication was the first segment I did live! I was very much nervous to go on air for the first time in my life. Though our teachers encouraged me with enthusiasm and wished me best of luck. They helped me write a script  and taught me how to link it. The appreciation they gave me after the show gave me confidence. It improves my communication skills and gave me exposure to built better understanding of broadcasting. Particularly it is a women institution and for us it is a great opportunity to learn things in a professional environment.

Amara Rafeeq, RJ at FM 96.6 Voice of LCWU, also shares her views that this campus radio has given her a platform to enhance her skills and  gave her the exposure of live coverage of events and transmit it on air. She is of the view that being an RJ at our campus radio, has immensely increased our vocabulary and information regarding different issues prevailing in our society. She is thankful to the department for providing them such great opportunities to bring out their talent.

Interviewing is an art which is a complex social interaction between two people or more. Here at our campus radio we are given such opportunities to interview eminent personalities and celebrities. It is a platform where we can establish good communication skills and interact with a wide range of audiences by providing them information, infotainment and entertainment. Wajeeha Ahmad, my counterpart as RJ says that it is a blessing that we students are given a platform to learn most of the technicalities and detailed tactics of broadcasting before entering the media channels.

Besides, campus radio is a joy to be a part of such colorful place. Where you are independent to produce different kinds of programs, dramas, segments, features and documentaries subjects related to all fields of life. FM 96.6 is a marvelous path for us as young journalists.

Campus Radio- A Platform for Young Journalists

Campus Radio- A Platform for Young Journalists

Campus radio or university radio is a type of radio station that is run by the students of a college, university or other educational institution. It is considered a pivotal tool to provide a platform to the students or young journalists. It gives us, as students or immature journalists to get experience or have an outlook of professional environment and training before entering mainstream media channels.
Campus radio serves as a lab or training center as well, where students are allowed to do experiments on different formats of broadcasting, light radio, radio drama, radio feature, news bulletin for radio, talk shows and radio documentaries. They than form their basis and learn a lot about the techniques of controlling and managing broadcast programs.

One of the most exciting advantage of campus radio is that the programming can be exclusively prepared by the students which enhance their skills and teach them tactics in detail. Sometimes campus radio stations are operated for the purpose of training professional radio personnel, sometimes with the aim of broadcasting educational programming, while other radio stations exist to provide an alternative to commercial broadcasting, but most of the campus radio stations are serving the purpose of giving a platform to young journalists to polish themselves. Adnan Rehmat, head of the local media support organisation Intermedia says, “Journalism students should be able to produce content like talk shows, interviews and current affairs programs for radio and TV as part of their academic activities.” The campus radio thus serves here by providing such opportunities to the media students.

Recent research have shown that community or campus based radio stations are actually contributing to social development. Students are trained in producing such programs which are based on the societal issues to create awareness and give information to their listeners. Such is the aim of our radio campus, Fm 96.6 voice of LCWU, Lahore College For Women University, where trained professional teachers are hired to teach journalistic skills to the media students and to the students who are willing to contribute to the campus radio.
